Job 116, Strike Up the Band, 1927-1930
Summary: This musical comedy in two acts and ten scenes was written by George S. Kaufman. Music and lyrics were by George and Ira Gershwin, dances were by John Boyle, scenery was by Bel Geddes, and costumes were by Charles LeMaire. It was produced by Edgar Selwyn and staged by R. H. Burnside at the Imperial Theatre in Philadelphia on 20-27 September 1927. The cast included Herbert Corthell, Edna May Oliver, Lew Hearn, and Morton Downey. It was later produced at the Shubert Theatre in New York with a libretto revised by Morris Ryskind. This production opened on 14 January 1929 and ran for 191 performances. It was directed by Alexander Leftwich, redesigned by Raymond Sovey, and included dances by George Hale. The cast included Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough.
