Abstract:
The collection consists mainly of
printed instructions and diagrams for a variety of magic tricks, as well as magic
catalogs collected by both Moore and Averyt. One folder relating to Averyt contains
correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and school-related papers. Moore’s magic
career
is represented by way of correspondence, clippings, programs, publicity, and other
materials.

Dr. Carl L. Moore was a Texas dentist who also performed as a magician. Bennett
Averyt was a student at the University of Texas at Austin.
Scope and Contents
The Carl L. Moore and Bennett Averyt Collection of Magic is made up of magic-related
materials and was received by the Harry Ransom Center from Bennett Averyt in 1990
from the Gifts Department of the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries.
The collection consists mainly of printed instructions and diagrams for a variety
of
magic tricks, as well as magic catalogs collected by both Moore and Averyt. One
folder relating to Averyt contains correspondence, clippings, ephemera, and
school-related papers. Nearly an entire box documents Moore’s magic career, by
way
of correspondence, clippings, programs, publicity, and other materials.
Separated Material
Magic periodicals originally collected by Dr. Carl L. Moore and, subsequently by
Averyt, were transferred to the Ransom Center Library. Included were titles such
as
Genii, The Conjuror’s
Magazine, Grants Inner Circle Magazine,
Hugard’s Magic Monthly, The Linking Ring, M-U-M, The New Conjuror’s Magazine, The
Phoenix, The Sphinx, Tops: The Magazine of Magic, plus a few other scattered
titles.
