The Ernest Hemingway Literary File
consists of over 1500 images, chiefly of Ernest’s childhood and family members
(siblings, parents, grandparents, and siblings’ spouses and children), and of his
parents’ travels in the United States and Cuba.

Open for research. Please note: Transparencies may be accessed but require 24 hours
advance notice. Negatives cannot be accessed without curatorial approval. Light
sensitive materials must be viewed under low-level lighting. Some materials may be
restricted from viewing. To make an appointment or to reserve photography materials,
please contact the Center's staff at photography@hrc.utexas.edu.
The Ernest Hemingway Literary File consists of over 1500 images, chiefly of Ernest’s
childhood and family members (siblings, parents, grandparents, and siblings’ spouses
and children), and of his parents’ travels in the United States and Cuba. Formats
include cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, matted and unmatted formal portraits,
snapshots, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, glass negatives and positive
transparencies, and a nitrate negative. Most of the snapshots were made by Ernest’s
father, Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway.
This collection forms a part of the Literary File Photography Colelction, which is
comprised of photographs and albums withdrawn from the libraries and/or papers of
literary figures. generally include portraits and images collected by or of those
figures.
