Tsugouharu Foujita was born in Tokyo, Japan, on November 27, 1886. He moved to Paris
in 1913 after studying at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and in less than a decade
gained a reputation for his singular style of delicate line drawings, paintings, and
prints. Throughout his life he travelled extensively, often returning to and residing
in Japan. His professional work included mural commissions, exhibitions, and work
for the Japanese Navy and Army Ministries depicting and describing war zones in China
and South-East Asia. He returned to Paris and took French nationality in 1955, converting
to Catholicism and changing his name to Léonard, in honor of Leonardo da Vinci. He
spent the last few years of his life designing stained glass and murals for the chapel
of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix in Reims. He died in Zurich, January 29, 1968.
