The collection consists chiefly of illustrations considered for non-fiction works
by author and artist T. H. (Terence Hanbury) White (British, 1906-1964). These include
copy prints of a variety of eighteenth-century portraits and illustrations that were
considered or used for The Age of Scandal (1950) and The Scandalmonger (1952) (980:048:0008-0041). Only one of the illustrations appears in published form
in The Age of Scandal (948:048:0009, 948:048:0010--two identical copy prints of a painting). There are
notes on the verso of some of the prints that reference the relevant chapter in either
book. It is unclear if these notes were made by White or others at a later date.
One photograph of a still life of hunting, fishing, and flying equipment may have
been considered for England Have My Bones (1936) (980:048:0007).
Snapshots or copy prints of illuminated manuscript pages considered for The Book of Beasts: Being a Translation from a Latin Bestiary of the Twelfth Century
Made and Edited by T. H. White (1954) are present (980:048:0042-0105), as well as images rejected for the same title
(997:0105:0164-0186). Also included are photographs of White at his home in Alderney
and at Stowe School (980:048:0003; 980:048:0004; 980:048:0006) and additional images
pertaining to him (980:0048:0001-0002). All photographs are gelatin silver prints,
the majority separated from books.
