Barry Gifford and Lawrence Lee Papers for Jack's Book: An Oral
Biography of Jack Kerouac (Manuscript Collection MS-04859). Harry Ransom Center,
The University of Texas at Austin.
The Barry Gifford and Lawrence Lee papers consist of interview files, research materials,
correspondence, typescripts, and other files created by the authors for Jack's Book: An Oral Biography of Jack Kerouac (1978), which was
based on interviews of Jack Kerouac's contemporaries. The materials have been arranged
into
three series: I. Interview Files, II. Jack's Book
Typescripts, and III. Other Files.
The interview files in Series I. contain interview transcripts, photocopies of
correspondence with Kerouac, and correspondence with Gifford, Lee, and their publishers.
Interviewees for the book included a number of noted figures, such as William S. Burroughs,
Allen Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso. Much of the content of the interviews was not actually
used in the book, and in the case of William S. Burroughs, this was at his own request.
Series II. contains four drafts of Jack's Book, arranged in
their presumed order of creation.
The materials in Series III. relate to the writing and publishing of the book, including
correspondence with the publishers.
Separated Material
The audio tapes containing the interviews were transferred to the Ransom Center's
Sound
Recordings Collection.
