Vasco Ascolini Photography Collection (PH-00042). Harry Ransom Center, The University
of Texas at Austin.
The collection consists of seventy-six gelatin silver prints by Vasco Ascolini
(Italian, born 1937) that are arranged into the following five series: I. Iter
Facere, 1986; II. Monumentum/Monumenti, 1986; III. Theatre, twenty items, 1986;
IV.
Museum: Homo Sapiens, 1987; and V. Metafisica, thirty items, 1986-1988. All
photographs are signed, dated, and labeled by the photographer on the verso.
The Iter Facere series is comprised of twelve images showing the contrasts between
man-made elements and nature, and between modern and ancient objects. The second
series, Monumentum/Monumenti, is comprised of nine views of sculpture within the
context of their surrounding architecture. Theatre, the third series, consists
of
twenty grainy, abstract views of a variety of performances, predominantly from
the J
Japanese theater (Kabuki, Bunraku, and Kagura). The series also includes portraits
of
Marcel Marceau and Lindsay Kemp. The fourth series, Museum: Homo Sapiens, consists
of three interior views, a portrait of a baby, and a still-life of a model head.
Metafisica, the final and largest series, contains images with details of sculpture
and walls, and architecture interiors and exteriors, that were photographed in
chiaroscuro lighting.
