The papers of James Magnuson, American playwright, novelist, professor, and former
director
of the James A. Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, contains handwritten
and typescript drafts for all of his books, scripts for plays and television, screenplays
and film treatments, notebooks, about an inch of correspondence (most in the form
of printed
emails), a few photographs and audiovisual media, as well as electronic records. For
the
most part, there is very little paper-based material documenting Magnuson's 23-year
career
as the director of the Michener Center. The papers are arranged into three series:
I. Works,
circa 1960s-2019, undated; II. Personal and Professional Papers, circa 1950s-2017,
undated;
Series III. Electronic Records, 2019. |
|
Magnuson prepared his papers for the Ransom Center and identified and labeled materials
and
work drafts. When original folders and boxes provided a meaningful label, that wording
was
used in the container list and is indicated in single quotation marks. |
|
A portion of the material in the collection was damaged by water, resulting in stuck
and
adhered pages of typing paper (resulting in a solid block of paper), and some material
was
contaminated with mold. Material with minor mold damage was cleaned to remove mold
spores
after it arrived at the Ransom Center. In rare circumstances, when material was too
damaged
by mold to be used safely, it was copied (or clean duplicates were retained) and the
original was deaccessioned. A list of deaccessioned material is available to researchers
upon request. Due to being stored in proximity to each other, items that did not exhibit
mold may still have been exposed to mold spores. Researchers who are
sensitive to mold may wish to wear a mask and gloves while examining this collection
in
the Center's Reading Room. All researchers are encouraged to wash their hands after
using
the James Magnuson Papers before using material in other collections. |
|
Series I. Works, circa 1960s-2019, undated forms the bulk of the material and consists
of
slightly over eleven record center cartons of notes, drafts, and some proofs for Magnuson's
published books, produced and/or published plays, scripts for episodes of television
shows,
short works, and notebooks, as well as unpublished and unproduced works. Although
it is the
largest segment of the collection, there are gaps in the material, with many works
represented only by final versions, without the expected working drafts, editor’s
copies,
and proofs, that document the editing and reshaping of a work. The series is arranged
into
five subseries: A. Novels; B. Plays; C. Television and Film; D. Short Works; and E.
Notebooks. Researchers should also consult Series III. Electronic Records, as computer
files
are present for some earlier works (presumably retyped from the analog paper copy
into a
more current version using word processing software) and Magnuson's last two books
(likely
written in a digital environment). |
|
Subseries A. Novels, 1969-2016, undated includes drafts and related material for all
ten of
Magnuson's published books, as well as unpublished books and unrealized film projects,
and
are listed in alphabetical order by title. For the most part, earlier novels are represented
only by notebooks containing handwritten drafts and fragments and/or a single final
typescript. Novels written in the late 1980s and after are often better documented;
materials present for these works may include several reworked drafts, proofs, and
screen
adaptations. Within each title, items are generally arranged in chronological order
of
literary production, from research and notes to working drafts to publication proofs.
When
present, related materials such as screen adaptations follow drafts. |
|
Magnuson typically handwrote early drafts of works in notebooks during his early career
and
later, on yellow legal paper. Looseleaf draft pages for later works arrived at the
Center
mostly unfoldered and in no discernible order. They were placed in archival folders
according to their original orientation without additional arrangement. |
|
See also Subseries E. Notebooks for additional early notes and drafts of earlier novels,
Series II. Personal and Professional Papers for reviews and related articles, and
Series
III. Electronic Records for related computer files. |
|
Subseries B. Plays, circa 1964-2011 contains Magnuson's earliest work in the collection.
In
addition to script drafts, the subseries includes published versions of two of his
plays
(No Snakes in This Grass and African
Medea), as well as programs and photographs for some plays that were staged. There
are multiple copies of drafts for many of Magnuson's plays. The date assigned to these
drafts is the year the play was written, but Magnuson seems to have retyped or converted
many of them to new formats; for example, computer printouts of drafts that were originally
typewritten. During processing, a comparison was not made to determine if these scripts
were
reworked or are simply new copies of the original drafts. See Series II. Personal
and
Professional Papers for reviews and related articles and Series III. Electronic Records
for
related computer files. |
|
Subseries C. Television and Film, 1985-1994, undated is small in volume and includes
script drafts
for produced and unproduced television sitcoms and dramas, as well as one screenplay
that
was never produced but had a staged reading as part of the Austin Film Festival.
Although Magnuson wrote for the primetime soap opera Knots
Landing for over two years, only two episode drafts are present in the
subseries. |
|
Subseries D. Short Works, circa 1960s-2012 is also small in volume and includes drafts
of
talks, introductory remarks, articles, short stories, poems, and unidentified fragments. |
|
Subseries E. Notebooks, circa 1960s-2010s contains 36 spiral-bound notebooks with
early
drafts, notes, ideas, and observations. The titles listed in single quotes in the
container
list derive from notes Magnuson made when preparing his papers for the Center or original
titles written directly on the notebook. Notebooks often contain more than one work
and many
are unidentified. Some notebooks include folded yellow legal paper—or other notes—laid
in.
These were unfolded but left in place. A few notebooks have water damage with smudged
writing. |
|
Series II. Personal and Professional Papers, circa 1950s-2017, undated includes articles
about Magnuson and the Michener Center, annual calendars from 1999-2017, correspondence,
three versions of his CV, some family and professional photographs, Magnuson's mother's
poetry, reviews of his books and plays, and a small sprinkling of course- and UT-related
documents. Researchers should consult Series III. Electronic Records for additional
material
related to Magnuson's directorship of the Michener Center, as most of the documents
about
his career are only represented by computer files. |
|
Some personal and professional letters were found intermixed within drafts or filed
with
other materials. To aid the researcher, they have been removed from their original
location
and arranged together in one folder. In addition to this correspondence, the collection
contained a folder of printed emails from authors invited to the Michener Center (for
example, Peter Carey and Colm Tóibín), some of whom also have collections of
archival papers at the Ransom Center (J. M. Coetzee, Jim Crace, Denis Johnson, and
Ian
McEwan). This email correspondence, more personal in nature and rarely related to
their
residencies at the Michener Center, was arranged alphabetically by author's last name
in
individual folders. Occasionally, additional correspondents are included in some email
threads, such as when an email was forwarded to or from a third party. |
|
Series III. Electronic Records, 2019 contains computer files documenting various aspects
of
Magnuson's professional career, his writing, and his personal life. It completes some
gaps
in the paper files. The list of electronic files was made by the Digital Archivist
between
2021 and 2023, prior to the processing of the paper records. Each entry includes a
brief
description, the number of files, the file formats, and the timestamp. These dates
do not
necessarily reflect precisely when the file was created or last saved. In the Magnuson
Papers, all electronic files are dated 2019, presumably the date that Magnuson prepared
and
organized the files for transfer to the Center. |
