      <abstract label="Abstract:" encodinganalog="520$a">Manuscript and typescript drafts, galley
        proofs, and page proofs represent <emph render="italic">The Dungeon of the Heart</emph> by
        Edwin T. Bowden, a member of The University of Texas at Austin English faculty from 1956
        until 1994. His text considers American fiction from James Fenimore Cooper to J. D. Salinger
        and the ways in which American novelists represent the <emph render="doublequote">problems
          of individualism and conformity.</emph></abstract>
