      <head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p>English novelist Isabel Diana Colegate was born on September 10, 1931, in London, England
to parents Sir Arthur Colegate and Winifred Mary Colegate (née Worsley). Her family moved to
Lincolnshire after her birth, and her experiences there with the English upper class later
informed her depictions of the aristocracy within her works. She received her education from
a boarding school in Shropshire, and later at Runton Hill School in Norfolk, before leaving
formal education at the age of sixteen. In 1953, she married English businessman Michael
Fenwick Briggs (7 July 1926 – 22 July 2017), who led preservation work in Bath, Somerset and
served as chairman of the Bath Preservation Trust from 1986 to 2006. They bought Midford
Castle in 1961, completing extensive renovations and repairs before selling the property in
2006 and moving to Mells in Somerset. They had three children together, two sons and one
        daughter.</p>
<p>From 1952 to 1957, she formed the literary agency Anthony Blond (London) Ltd. in
partnership with publisher and author Anthony Blond (20 March 1928 – 27 February 2008). It
was during her time at the literary agency that she wrote her first novel, <title
render="italic">The Blackmailer</title>, which became one of the first titles released
under Blond's newly-established publishing firm in 1958. Her next two novels, <title
          render="italic">A Man of Power</title> (1960) and <title render="italic">The Great
Occasion</title> (1962), were also published by Blond's firm. Beginning with her fourth
        book, <title render="italic">Statues in a Garden</title> (1964), Colegate began contracting
with larger publishing firms in the United Kingdom for her works. Though no longer in
business together, she maintained a personal relationship with Blond until his death in
        2008.</p>
      <p>Following the early success of <title render="italic">Statues in a Garden</title>, Colegate
        wrote a trilogy of novels titled <title render="italic">Orlando King</title> (1968), <title
          render="italic">Orlando at the Brazen Threshold</title> (1971), and <title render="italic"
          >Agatha</title> (1973), which were later compiled into the <title render="italic">Orlando
          Trilogy</title> in 1984. In 1979, Colegate wrote <title render="italic">News from the City
of the Sun</title>, followed by what is widely regarded as her most successful work,
          <title render="italic">The Shooting Party</title> (1980). <title render="italic">The
Shooting Party</title> won the WH Smith Literary Award in 1981 and was later adapted into
a successful film in 1984 by English television and film director Alan Bridges (28 September
1927 – 7 December 2013). In 1985, Colegate published a small compilation of short stories
under the title <title render="italic">A Glimpse of Sion's Glory and Other Stories</title>,
followed by three additional fiction novels; <title render="italic">Deceits of Time</title>
        (1988); <title render="italic">The Summer of the Royal Visit</title> (1991); and <title
          render="italic">Winter Journey</title> (1995).</p>
<p>Colegate's final novel, <title render="italic">A Pelican in the Wilderness: Hermits,
Solitaries and Recluses</title> (2002), is a non-fiction work that explores the hermit
tradition and the experiences of both religious and secular hermits found throughout the
world. A related museum exhibition titled, <title render="italic">A Pelican in the
Wilderness: Hermits and Solitaries in Art</title>, was held at the Holburne Museum of Art
in Bath, England from April 16th through June 2nd in 2002. In addition to Colegate's
thirteen published novels, she also wrote articles, short stories, and book reviews for
        periodicals, including magazines and newspapers.</p>
      <p>Colegate died on 12 March 2023, aged 91.</p>

      <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>The Isabel Colegate papers consist of drafts of published and unpublished works, research,
contracts, personal and professional correspondence, notebooks, personal papers, and
clippings belonging to English novelist Isabel Colegate. The personal and professional
papers document Colegate's career and writing process and include novels, short stories,
articles, book reviews, essays, and television scripts. The papers are organized into two
series: I. Works, 1960-2004, undated and II. Personal and Professional Papers, 1931-2021,
        undated.</p>
<p>Series I. Works constitutes the bulk of the papers and includes materials associated with
Colegate's writings. It is arranged into two subseries: A. Notebooks, 1960, undated and B.
Typescripts and Unbound Drafts, 1980-2004, undated.</p>
<p>Subseries A. Notebooks represents most of Colegate's published novels, and include
outlines, drafts, research notes, jottings, illustrations, short stories, and unidentified
works. Colegate seemed to handwrite early drafts of her novels and short stories in journal
notebooks, but many of these are unidentified, undated, and incomplete. In some cases,
Colegate gave titles to individual journals, but in most cases the title given in the
container list is based on comparing the text to published books or is the first titled work
within the journal. Very often, notebooks contain multiple identified and unidentified
drafts, idea fragments, jottings (such as phone numbers or lists), and other notes. Colegate
often flipped the journal and began using the back for a new work or project, so one should
look at all pages even if the journal appears to have many blank sections. Some notebooks
contain inserted pages or papers that are not attached to the notebook itself, typically as
continuations or edits of drafts within the notebook, but some of these inserts are
unrelated to the notebook's contents. The notes are most often research in the form of book
lists and notes from various sources, or early outlines and character notes for her novels.
Most notebooks are in good condition, but some are fragile, worn, or contain minor
        damage.</p>
<p>Subseries B. Typescripts and Unbound Drafts represents most of Colegate's later short
stories and articles, and includes drafts, notes, clippings, lectures, book reviews,
correspondence, and research. Articles written by Colegate are dated from 1989 to 2002 and
includes multiple copies and drafts of an undated article about her early life. Book reviews
are dated from 1980 to 1999 and include annotated drafts and clippings. Lectures include one
undated speech about Isabelle Eberhardt and the related correspondence and early drafts for
a lecture given at the Bath International Music Festival on Colegate's hermit exhibition,
held at the Holburne Museum of Art and dated 2001 to 2002.</p>
<p>Short stories include undated typescripts of story drafts, some of which are annotated,
incomplete, untitled, or have multiple copies. Short stories are arranged alphabetically by
title within the papers, with multiple copies of the same story kept grouped together.
Novels include unbound drafts, notes, outlines, research, and correspondence related to
Colegate's novels, primarily her final novel <title render="italic">A Pelican in the
Wilderness</title> (2002). Folders related to <title render="italic">A Pelican in the
Wilderness</title> contain documentation and correspondence for the associated exhibition,
<title render="italic">A Pelican in the Wilderness: Hermits and Solitaries in Art</title>,
held at the Holburne Museum of Art in 2002. This subseries also contains materials related
to English writer and poet Walter Savage Landor (30 January 1775 – 17 September 1864),
including short story drafts, notes, research, and various other writings by Colegate about
        Landor.</p>
<p>Series II. Personal and Professional Papers, 1931-2021, undated consists of awards,
clippings, contracts, correspondence, notes, royalty statements, and other collected
        material belonging to Isabel Colegate.</p>
<p>Awards and Honors contains Colegate's honorary Master of Arts degree from the University
of Bath in 1988 and a certificate in flute from the Royal Schools of Music dated 1948.</p>
<p>Blond, Anthony – Memorial contains newspaper clippings of articles and obituaries for
Anthony Blond, including one obituary written by Colegate. It also contains a pamphlet for
Blond's funeral service, a eulogy draft written by Colegate, and a newspaper article about
the death of Blond's wife, Laura Blond, not written by Colegate. The subseries is dated from
1993 to 2009, but the bulk of materials are dated 2008 around the time of Blond's death.</p>
<p>Briggs, Michael contains materials related to Michael Briggs's honorary Doctor of Laws
degree received from the University of Bath in 2002, including a conferment speech,
biographical details of Briggs, a speech written by Briggs, and a newspaper clipping about
        the event.</p>
<p>Clippings is dated from 1991 to 2020 and includes articles written about Colegate or her
work, usually in the form of book reviews or articles related to her home at Midford Castle.
Most of the clippings are news articles and book reviews related to her final novel <title
render="italic">A Pelican in the Wilderness</title> (2002). There is one clipping of an
obituary for English novelist and painter Jini Fiennes (27 February 1938 – 28 December
1993), not written by or containing mention of Colegate.</p>
<p>Collected Materials contains undated materials collected by Colegate throughout her life,
including a photographic reproduction of an unidentified painting; a negative photo of an
unidentified painting; a copy of Colegate's baptismal certificate; a printout of
an unidentified photograph; 'The Book Book,' a reading record kept by Colegate and dated
1988; and an undated article written by Victoria Worsley, titled 'Looking back lightly at
        Brooklands.'</p>
<p>Contracts is generally arranged in chronological order by original publication date and
includes signed and unsigned contracts and related correspondence for Colegate's novels,
articles, book reviews, and other works. Contract documentation includes both original
publications and reprints, as well as contracts for derivative works based on Colegate's
novels. The materials date between 1964 and 2019, with some undated documents.</p>
<p>Correspondence is arranged in chronological order by date, and includes handwritten and
typed letters, postcards, invitations, memos, and telegrams. Correspondence is dated from
1950 to 2020 with some undated materials, but the bulk of the letters are dated between 1980
and 2002. Much of the correspondence dated between 2000 and 2003 is related to Colegate's
final novel, <title render="italic">A Pelican in the Wilderness</title> (2002), and its
associated exhibit at the Holburne Museum of Art. Some correspondence related to
contracts—but missing the discussed contract documentation—has been left in this subseries.
Correspondence related to royalty statements and other financial records are filed with
        Royalty Statements.</p>
<p>Derivative Works contains works by other authors based on or in reference to Colegate's
novels. It includes a 2004 essay titled Shakespeare in Solitary by American-English actor
        Peter Eyre (11 March 1942-), which references Colegate's <title render="italic">A Pelican in
the Wilderness</title> (2002), and a 1991 paper titled "The Influence of Sophocles' Theban
Plays on Modern Literature" by Henry E. A. H. Stewart, which references Colegate's trilogy of
        Orlando King novels.</p>
<p>Events documents occasions related to Colegate's career as an author. Included is a seating
chart and dinner menu invitation for the 1993 Grand Day dinner held at Gray's Inn and an
address list for participants of the 1996 International Festival of Authors.</p>
<p>Notes and Jottings consists of unbound notes and jottings handwritten by Colegate. These
        materials are undated and unidentified.</p>
<p>Royalty Statements contains correspondence, statements, and supplementary documentation
pertaining to royalty earnings and agreements for Colegate's works. They are dated from 1998
to 2021, but the bulk of the materials are dated from 2002 to 2019.</p>
