The collection consists of 363 photographs by Roger Fenton (British, 1819-1869). Select group descriptions follow.

964:0351:0001-0272, 0274-0311, 0256b, 0273a -- Salted paper prints of the Crimean War from the following three folios: Historical Portrait Gallery: Photographs Taken in the Crimea; Incidents of Camp Life: Photographs Taken in the Crimea; and Photographs Taken in the Crimea under the Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen. All were published by Agnew and Sons between 1855 and 1856. While the bulk of this material consists of individual and group portraits of military personnel, there are also scenes of military camp life, views of Balaklava, and landscapes.

964:0352:0001-0012 -- The Photographical Panorama of the Plateau of Sebastopol (Manchester, England: Agnew and Sons, [1855-1856]). Published folio containing salted paper prints and a key for the panorama.

Helmut and Alison Gernsheim Papers and Photography Collection: Original Fenton correspondence from Crimea and a handwritten notebook (1854-1855) are located in Box 27.3-4 of the Helmut and Alison Gernsheim Papers and Photography Collection (PH-02378).

In 1855, many of Fenton's photographs were exhibited at the Gallery of the Water Colour Society in London. A copy of the original 1855 prospectus for a portfolio of the prints, Exhibition of the Photographic Pictures Taken in the Crimea, is located in the Center's library with call number TR 6 G73 L6 F5 HRC-P.

In 1856, copies of Fenton's Crimea portfolio and his original glass plate negatives were auctioned at Southgate and Barrett in London. A copy of the original auction catalog is located in the Center's library with call number Z 999 S6 HRC-P.
