Description:

The collection consists of 163 photographs by Maull & Polyblank (British, active 1854–1865), a prominent portrait studio known for photographing scientists, politicians, religious leaders, and other distinguished individuals of the period. The majority of the portraits belong to two key series: Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities and the Literary and Scientific Portrait Club.


Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities: 33 albumen prints, 10 with biographical wrappers
Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities was a serialized publication issued monthly from May 1856 to October 1859. It included forty 8 × 6-inch arched-top albumen prints mounted on 12 × 10-inch gilt-edged mounts, printed by Messrs de la Rue & Co. Each part was accompanied by a printed biographical wrapper, written initially by Herbert Fry and later by Edward Walford. The series was subsequently issued as a single bound edition in 1859.


Literary and Scientific Portrait Club: 99 albumen prints
The Literary and Scientific Portrait Club, introduced in 1855, consisted of 8 × 6-inch arched-top photographic portraits mounted on 12 × 10-inch gilt-edged card mounts. Members were required to sit for a portrait by Maull & Polyblank at a cost of ten shillings and six pence (10s. 6d.). In return, they received a copy of their portrait and had the option to purchase photographs of other members for three shillings (3s.) each. Many were fellows of learned societies, including the Royal Society (FRS), Linnean Society (FLS), Geological Society (FGS), Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), and the Chemical Society of London (CS). Due to the club’s extensive membership, no complete set of portraits is known to exist, and multiple versions of the series are in circulation. The photographs were often acquired individually and later compiled into albums. Portraits of some club members also appeared in the serialized publication Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities, issued between 1856 and 1859.

There are 20 albumen prints attributed to Maull & Polyblank that are mounted on light blue paper, possibly originating from a disbound album. These photographs depict men, women, and children, and are dated between 1855 and 1861, as inscribed on the mounts by an unidentified nineteenth-century hand. An additional 11 albumen prints that are not affiliated with a specific series.
