Description: |
The Holy Land, Egypt, Constantinople, Athens, etc. etc.: A Series of Forty-eight Photographs (London: Day & Son, 1866) is a photographically illustrated book containing forty-eight albumen prints by Francis Bedford, with descriptive text and an introduction by W. M. Thompson. The photographs were taken during the Prince’s tour of the Middle East in 1862. The volume is bound in blue pebble-grain cloth with gilt-stamped decorative borders and a central armorial design associated with the Prince of Wales, incorporating the Jerusalem cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and the motto “Deus vult” (“God wills it,” in Latin) on the front cover. The spine is lettered and ornamented in gilt, with all edges gilt. The forty-eight albumen prints measure approximately 10 × 12.5 cm and are mounted on card measuring approximately 19 × 24.5 cm. The front pastedown bears the ownership signature of Mary Dewich(?). The photographs depict a range of views across Egypt and the Middle East, including natural and urban landscapes, architectural ruins, ancient monuments, and religious and archaeological sites, with figures present in several images. Places depicted include Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, Thebes, and Philae in Egypt; Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and other sites in the Holy Land; Baalbek and Damascus; Constantinople; and Athens. The volume is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1863. |
