Description:

The collection consists of 27 photographs by or attributed to Felice Beato (Italian-British, 1832–1909): 26 albumen prints and 1 salted paper print. The photographs depict a range of architectural subjects, some set within broader landscape settings, primarily in Lucknow, with additional views in Kolkata and Delhi documenting the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857–1858.


Also included are four views of the destruction of the Ta-ku (Dagu) Forts in North China following the Anglo-French storming during the Second Opium War (1856–1860); one panoramic view of a military camp in Hong Kong; and two hand-colored photographs depicting execution sites in Kiso, Japan.


Notable buildings pictured include the Taj Mahal (Agra); the Sikander Bagh (Lucknow); the Shah Najaf Imambara (Lucknow); the Chhota Imambara, also known as the Hussainabad Imambara (Lucknow); the Chattar Manzil palace (Lucknow); the Tombs of Saadat Ali Khan and Khursheed Zadi (Lucknow); the Khas Mahal palace at Agra Fort (Agra); the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah (Agra); the Metcalfe House (Delhi); and the Hindu Rao’s House (Delhi).


The photographs are part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963.
