Description:

My Cruise in the "Red Rose," 1873 (Rugby, England: Tait & Sons, 1876) is a photographically illustrated travelogue by M. E. Williams, featuring photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), Francis Frith & Co. (British, active 1859–1971), Frank Mason Good (British, 1839–1928), and an unidentified photographer. The 127-page volume is bound in black leather with a gilt-stamped emblem, blind-stamped borders, and gilt edges. An armorial bookplate for John Lancaster appears on the front pastedown.

The text documents an eight-month journey along the Red River undertaken with members of the Lancaster family, recording observations across Europe and the Middle East. Thirteen mounted albumen prints made between 1857 and 1875 are interspersed throughout the volume as visual complements to the narrative. Ten photographs are attributed to Francis Frith and/or Francis Frith & Co., two to Frank Mason Good, and one to an unidentified photographer. The images depict landscapes, towns, and historical sites, including ruins and architectural landmarks, with views representing Sintra, Gibraltar, Pompeii, Naples, Athens, İzmir (formerly Smyrna), Damascus, Baalbek, Jerusalem, Cairo, Luxor, and Karnak.

This volume is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963.
