The collection consists of 62 photographs by Frank Hurley (Australian, 1885-1962) that document Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, from 1914 to 1917, including scenes aboard and the sinking of the Endurance. The photographs, which are all gelatin silver prints, are accompanied by an eleven-page typescript narrative by the photographer. Hurley made the prints shortly before his death for the photo-historian Helmut Gernsheim. Titles from the typescript follow. |
