Description:

The collection consists of forty-nine photographic prints (48 albumen, 1 platinum) by the Scottish photographer James Valentine. Most are views of architecture and streetscapes in England and Scotland, landscape views of Scotland, and several genre scenes of Scottish life. Also included is an albumen photomontage made up of individual portraits of 97 members of the British Association meeting in Dundee in September 1867, accompanied by an index identifying the portraits (964:0785:0001). Additionally the collection contains an original paper envelope from James Valentine, on which is printed: “Photographs of Scottish Scenery / by / James Valentine, / Photographer / By Special Appointment / To Her Majesty, / the Queen, / Dundee”. The photographs date from the 1860s to 1890 (bulk ca. 1870).
