Description:

The collection consists of photographs, which date from circa 1900 to circa 1950, collected and possibly taken by Ernest Powell, a piano instructor in Marshall, Texas. Contained in 11 boxes are 158 prints (silver gelatin and platinum) and one painting, the subjects of which include celebrities, artists, and dignitaries, including Enzo Pina, Enrico Caruso, Vladimir Horowitz, and Helen Keller. Many of the photographs are signed by the subject and include associated poems by Powell. Known photographers with work in the collection include but are not limited to Edward S. Curtis, Lackey (Temple, TX), and Corti Art Studio (Marshall, TX). One additional box (12) is unsorted and contains materials previously stored off-site.
