Description:

Photographic album, bound in green leather, titled Marlborough Gems. Proofs. [Volume I]. The first page of the album is inscribed “F. C. Hue.” The album contains 85 photographs (78 albumen prints, 7 gelatin silver printing-out-paper prints) by various photographers that include: Orr & Barton of Bangalore (3), Baker & Burke (3), John Burke (2), W. Baker (1), Lala Deen Dayal (1), and Skeen & Co. (1). The photographs, which date to the 1880s, are views of architecture, monuments, rock cut temples, and daily life in various locales in India including: Agra (14), Delhi (12), Calcutta (6), Chamba (6), and Benares (a.k.a., Varanasi) (5). Laid into the album is Hue’s two-page handwritten inventory of all images in the album. Also laid into the album is a newspaper clipping from a 1903 edition of The Daily Telegraph (London, England) describing the author’s five-day excursion through India.
