Description:

The collection consists of approximately 6,252 items collected and created by Richard Tudor Fleming (American, 1890-1973). The bulk of the collection is comprised of 5,922 photographic, photolithographic and photomechanical postcards. Also included are 181 black-and-white photographs, 64 packets of photographs, 7 packets of black-and-white personal photographs, 16 booklets of black-and-white photographs, 56 souvenir booklets, four travel guides, two dance programs, and one hotel map. The materials are divided into two series: Series I. Postcards and Souvenirs, and Series II. Personal Photographs.

The bulk of the postcards are from European countries, specifically France, Italy, and Germany, and vary in subject from architecture to landscapes, and from genre scenes to art reproductions. Based on the items bearing postmarks, they date from 1939 to 1960 with the bulk dating to the 1950s. In keeping with Fleming’s organizational scheme, the postcards are filed alphabetically by country, and alphabetically by city within each country division.
