Description:

Five albums of cabinet photographs, one album per year from 1890 to 1894. Each album contains 36 images, and each image is accompanied by a biographical sketch of the individual depicted. Typical portraits are of the British royal family, nobility, actors and actresses, political figures, and, to a lesser extent, writers, artists, educators, political activists, and military figures. Not all subjects are English. American, Irish, Danish, and French are among the other nationalities also represented. The photographs were taken W. & D. Downey (British, active 1867-1908), a partnership of brothers William Downey (British, 1829-1915) and Daniel Downey (British, 1831-1881).
