Description:

Photographic album, bound in green leather, titled Marlborough Gems. Proofs. [Volume II], dating to the 1880s. The inside of the front cover bears the inscription: “60 gems / 3 proof prints”, and the first page is inscribed “F. C. Hue.” The album contains 85 mounted albumen prints, 8 of which are hand-colored, of landscapes and genre views of Sri Lanka (30), Burma (8), China (28), and Japan (19). The majority of photographs are by unknown photographers. Known photographers include: Scowen & Co. (16), C. Scowen (3), Skeen & Co. (3), Griffith (1), and K.K. of Japan (1). At least 4 of the unidentified photographs can be attributed to Scowen & Co. The photographs of Sri Lanka are landscapes of Kandy (16 images), with an additional landscapes of Colombo, Matale and Eliya, and several photographs of the tea industry. The photographs of Burma are all various views of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon. The photographs of China, largely of the Cantonese region, include images of Hong Kong harbor, junks, streetscapes, pagodas, and two portraits. Japan is portrayed through landscapes, streetscapes, and a series of photographs of daily life including several of market stalls. Laid into the album is Hue’s two-page handwritten inventory of all images in the album. Also laid into the album, among the images of China, are 14 slips of paper on which image captions are printed.
