Description: |
Photographically illustrated book, titled Occupation of Mashonaland (London: s.n., 1891), containing 153 mounted photographs by William Ellerton Fry (British, 1846-1930). The Ransom Center's copy is incomplete and lacks its binding. The photographs (carbon prints) document the 1890 march of the Mashonaland Pioneer Column, a force raised by the British diamond magnate and politician, Cecil Rhodes, and his British South Africa Company, with the goal of annexing the territories of Mashonaland and Matabeleland. The majority of the photographs, which appear on both the recto and verso of each sheet, are mounted two to a page. Also included are four panoramas. The subjects depicted include: expedition leaders (group portraits); the Column's encampments and activities; prominent natural landmarks; landscapes and vegetation; and native peoples. Although no individuals are identified by name, there are photographs of Khama III, chief of the Bamangwatos who allied himself with the British, and his wife. |
