Collection Name:

The Nile Reservoir Works at Aswan and Asyut

No. of Items:

81 images in 2 bound volumes

Span Dates:

[1898?]-1903

Description:

Two-volume set of photographic albums, entitled The Nile Reservoir Works at Aswan and Asyut, published in Cairo in 1902. The albums document and summarize the construction of the Aswan Dam and the Asyut Barrage (a.k.a. the Assiout Weir), and the attempts to preserve the temples on the Island of Philae, between 1898 and 1902.

The first volume is prefaced with an 8-page descriptive note written by Sir William Garstin (1849-1925), the Under Secretary of State for Public Works in Egypt, and it contains 31 mounted platinum prints (21 of the Aswan Dam, 2 of the Island of Philae, and 8 of the Asyut Barrage) by D. S. George.

The second volume does not contain any prefatory text, but the majority of photographs include captions as printed from the negatives, or are accompanied by a caption printed below the photograph on the album page. The album contains 50 photographic images, which include 5 panoramic images, comprised of a total of 59 photographs (38 platinum prints, 4 collodion printing-out paper prints, and 8 gelatin silver developing-out paper prints). The majority of images are by D. S. George (29, including 2 panoramas). One photograph is signed by “D.M.” The remaining 20 images are not signed but might be attributed D. S. George. In addition to 21 images of the dam and barrage construction, there are 15 views post-construction, 5 exterior views of the temples on Philae after the reservoir was filled, and 2 interior views of the temples on Philae. Additionally there are 4 photographs taken on the occasion of Sir Cecil Rhodes’ visit to the Aswan Dam, 2 photographs of eclipses seen over the Nile on June 28th, 1900, and on November 11, 1901, and one five-panel panoramic photograph of Aswan and the Nile.
