Description: |
Egypt and Palestine, Photographed and Described by Francis Frith (London: Virtue, 1858–1860) is a series of 76 photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), made between 1857 and 1858. Issued to subscribers in 25 monthly parts, the series retains its original serialized form. Each part contains three albumen prints (approximately 7 × 9 inches) accompanied by descriptive letterpress text authored by Frith, housed in a printed wrapper. Part I includes four albumen prints, including a studio self-portrait of Frith and an introductory essay. This set also includes a table of contents, along with a list of subscribers and an advertisement for Frith’s subsequent publication, Egypt, Sinai and Jerusalem, issued with the final part. The photographs document Frith’s first and possibly second expedition to Egypt and the Middle East, focusing on the region historically known as the Holy Land (including parts of present-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria). The accompanying text, written in a travelogue style, blends personal narrative with historical context and references to biblical sites and narratives. Egypt and Palestine, Photographed and Described by Francis Frith is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
