Description:

Twenty-four loose leaves from a family album of Henry Brudenell-Bruce, 5th Marquess of Ailesbury (British, 1842-1911). Thirty-eight of the pages are illustrated with mounted single or multiple photographs set into unique hand-drawn and colored borders and scenes. Due to the integral nature of the photographs within their settings, each page, rather than each photograph, was given an accession number. The majority of the nearly 90 photographs used are albumen prints but also included are 4 carbon prints. The borders and scenes are drawn in ink and watercolor. With the exception of one photograph bearing the seal of Medelssohn of London, the photographer(s) of the images are unknown. The majority of photographs are individual portraits of nobility, and eminent men and women of the day from the theater, the church, and the arts and sports worlds. Portraits of individuals engaged in similar professions are frequently grouped together on a single page, but the original order of the pages is unknown. There are a number of group portraits of sports teams, including the Cheltenham Eleven and the Malbro’ Eleven (cricket teams). Also included are photographs of architecture, including Warwick Castle and Haddon Hall, landscapes in Betwys-y-Coed and Clifton, and streetscapes including a view of Eastbourne.
