Description: |
Photograph album created by Thomas George Glover, R.E. (British, active 1860s). The album contains 71 mounted albumen prints, which date between 1863 and 1868, that are chiefly of India (42). Other locales pictured include: Vienna, Austria (9); England (4); France (4); Lahore, Pakistan (4); Brussels, Belgium (3); Munich and Cologne, Germany (3); and Bangladesh (2). Many of the images depict waterworks including dams and canals in India, but also included are four photographs taken near Brest, France, of one side of the first transatlantic cable. The other photographs are views of monuments, architecture, and genre scenes in both India and in Europe. Most of the photographs are uncredited, but sixteen of the photographs are by Glover, with an additional 14 by Col. Ross Thompson (British, 1838-1919), who was another member of the Royal Engineers, and one by Jung & Fricke (active in India, 1880s). Inscribed by Glover inside the front cover: “T.G. Glover- / RE.” and “Calcutta- / October- 9- 1866”. Glover also wrote descriptive titles below each photograph. |
