Description: |
Cartes-de-visite album, covered with brown morocco leather, with two gilt clasps, containing 100 cartes-de-visite dating from 1858 to circa 1873. Most of the cartes were collected by John Wodehouse (1848-1932), the second Earl of Kimberley, with additional cartes added by Helmut Gernsheim at a later date. The cartes are portraits of various members of the British royal family, prominent English politicians of the day, and a few famous Americans. Individuals include: Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Benjamin Disraeli, W. E. Gladstone, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Gen. Tom Thumb, and Commodore Nutt and Miss Minnie Warren on their wedding day. Sixteen of the cartes are accompanied by the sitters’ signatures, which were apparently cut from letters and pasted into the album. 95 of the cartes are by known photographers, with the majority of photographs by: John Watkins (16); J. E. Mayall (12); Caldesi, Blanford & Co. (7); Disderi (7); Mathew B. Brady (6); and Elliott & Fry (5). The following photographers are represented by four photographs each: H. Hering; London Stereoscopic Co.; and Maull, Henry & Co. Represented by three photographs each are: W. & D. Downey; Southwell; and Samuel A. Walker. Hills & Saunders, and Camille Silvy are represented by two photographs each. Photographers represented by one photograph only are: A. Beau; Bingham; Brunnen; Charles Clifford; Carl Gunther; Franz Hanfstaengl; Vernon Heath; Jabez Hughes; William Edward Kilburn; Lejeune; Maujean; Maull & Polyblank; Charles Reutlinger; W. Walker & Sons; and Herbert Watkins. |
