Published work by Eadweard Muybridge (American, born England, 1830-1904) titled Animal Locomotion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements, 1872-1885: Plates by Eadweard Muybridge (Philadelphia: Published under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, printed by the Photogravure Company of New York, 1887). Unique editions were created by subscribers, who selected plates from Muybridge's complete work of 781 plates, at a cost of ~100 for 100. The offering was held at the Academy of the Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania, 1887. (Cf. Gersheim, The History of Photography, 1969, p. 440.)

This copy, which was disbound and rehoused in two boxes, contains the following plates: 3, 133 (2 copies), 152 (2 copies), 174 (2 copies), 187, 214 (2 copies), 279, 289, 347 (2 copies), 408 (2 copies), 465, 471, 565 (2 copies), 616 (3 copies), 626 (3 copies), 647 (2 copies), 659 (2 copies), 710 (3 copies), 721 (2 copies), 739 (2 copies), 755. All of the plates are marked: Author's edition.
