Description: |
Oversize photographic album bound in red leather, entitled Vues de Paris et de Ses Environs, 1870-71. Vol. I, by the photographer Langerock of Paris, published in 1871 or later. The album is incomplete (several pages have been cut out), containing just 7 albumen prints which document the destruction of Paris resulting from the Paris Commune (the insurrection of Paris against the French government in 1871). There are 3 views of the ruined Château de St. Cloud, 2 views of the St. Cloud area, and 2 views of the Hotel de Ville. Four of the photographs are stamped or signed (on the negative) by Langerock, 1 of which is accompanied by the label of Langerock’s successor Numa Blanc (French, 1816-1897), and the remaining 3 photographs are attributed to Langerock. Adhered to the second page is an advertisement for later volumes in the series, and inserted into the album is a scrap of paper on which Helmut Gernsheim has written: “7 Photographs of St. Cloud & the Hotel de Ville, Paris 1870-71 by Langerock, Paris”. |
