Description:

Four photographic albums of views of Italy (including Rome, Florence, Milan, Naples and Vienna), Austria, Switzerland, Algeria, Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, England, and Scotland. Photographs are commercially produced and some of the Italian photographs are hand tinted. Photographers include Francis Bedford, Gustave Hermans (Belgian, 1856-1934), credited as "G. H. Phot," Oscar Kramer, J. Kuhn, J. Patrick, Schroeder & Cie., Giorgio Sommer, August Stauda, Stereoscopic Co. Ltd., James Valentine, George Washington Wilson, A. Wimmer, X. Phot. (i.e., Neurdein frères) as well as unidentified photographers. The subjects of the photographs include: landscapes, cityscapes, folk costume, architecture (exteriors, interiors), monuments, ruins, castles, cemeteries, cathedrals, art reproductions, and portraits of royalty. The photos were collected by Emma Lucinda Latting Hines in Europe between the late 1800s to early 1900s. Each album contains a plate in the inside cover written by Richard Baggett Latting explaining the albums’ contents and a short biography of Emma Latting Hines (1852-1932).

Album 1 (2000:0038:0001-0048) -- Photographs of Rome, Florence, Milan, Pisa, Geneva, and Vienna. Some of the subjects included are the Vatican, St. Paul’s Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Mt. Blanc.

Album 2 (2000:0038:0049-0094) -- Photographs of Algeria, Pompeii, Naples, and Rome. Some of the subjects included are Moorish architecture, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, and the Colosseum.

Album 3 (2000:0038:0095:0154) -- Photographs of Vienna, Dresden, Frankfurt, Antwerp, Paris, and London. Some of the subjects included are Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and Houses of Parliament in England.

Album 4 (2000:0038:0155-0200) -- Photographs of London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Some of the subjects included are Windsor Castle, York Minster, highlanders, and art reproductions of royalty from Scotland.
Also included are seven lithographs/drawings of people and various European architectural sites. These were found as loose pages in the back of the third album.
