Description: |
Photographic Views of Stratford-on-Avon and Neighbourhood (Chester: Catherall & Prichard, ca. 1868) is a photographically illustrated book containing ten albumen prints by Francis Bedford (British, 1816–1894), made ca. 1860s. The volume is bound in green cloth with decorative blind embossing, gilt-stamped title and border, and all edges gilt. The front pastedown bears the bookplate of the library of Herbert Foster Knowles, and the front flyleaf is inscribed with the ownership signature of Joseph R. Hawley. The photographs primarily depict exterior and interior views of architectural landmarks in and around Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town turned popular tourist destination, known as the birthplace and burial site of William Shakespeare (1564–1616). |
