Description:

Photographically illustrated book by John Reddie Black (1827-1880) entitled Young Japan. Yokohama and Yedo. A Narrative of the Settlement and the City from the Signing of the Treatise in 1858, to the Close of the Year 1879. With a Glance at the Progress of Japan During a Period of Twenty-one Years (London: Trubner & Co.; Yokohama: Kelly & Co., 1880-1881). Published as two volumes, the Ransom Center has volume 1 only. It contains 15 mounted albumen prints, the captions for which follow.
