Description: |
The collection consists of two copies of Hyperion: A Romance (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1868), a photographically illustrated book by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (American, 1807–1882). Both volumes contain 24 mounted albumen prints by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898) and belong to the American reissue of the British edition (London: Alfred W. Bennett, 1865). Both copies are bound in brown leather with elaborate blind-tooling, gilt lettering, and gilt edges. The second copy features personalized gilt lettering on the front cover: “Mary P. Innerarity / Christmas, 1870.” Inspired by Longfellow's travels through Europe, the novel blends elements of romance and personal reflection. The 24 photographs, made between 1863 and 1864, are interspersed throughout the text, complementing Longfellow’s scenic descriptions of landscapes in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. While both copies share identical titles and sequencing, eight of the photographs differ, presenting either variants of the same images or entirely different photographs. |
