Description: |
The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments, also known as The Queen’s Bible (Glasgow, Edinburgh, London: William Mackenzie, 1862–1863), is a photographically illustrated book published in two volumes, containing 57 photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), made between 1857 and 1860. Both volumes are bound in red morocco with elaborate gilt and blind tooling. The covers are framed by a blind-stamped border enclosing a recessed central panel, which bears the crowned gilt cipher of Queen Victoria. The boards are edged in brass, with double brass clasps at the fore edge. The spines are gilt-tooled with five raised bands and titled Holy Bible, Vol. I [or Vol. II] in gilt. All edges are gilt. Volume I contains 29 albumen prints and Volume II contains 28, for a total of 57 albumen prints. The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments was purchased through the generosity of the B. H. Breslauer Foundation, and with funds provided by the David Douglas Duncan Endowment for Photojournalism and the Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Endowment in Photography. |
