Description:

Published work, titled The North American Indian, which is "...a series of volumes picturing and describing the Indians of the United States, and Alaska, written, illustrated, and published by Edward S. Curtis", edited by Frederick Webb Hodge, with a foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. Field research was conducted under the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan (Seattle: E.S. Curtis, and Cambridge, Mass.: The University Press, 1907-1930). Issued in 20 volumes, which contain illustrations, music and photogravure on tissue portraits, the edition was limited to 500 copies of which the Ransom Center's copy is number 53. This limited edition was produced on three types of paper, the rarest being the tissue copies. Each volume contains an index, and volumes 3 through 20 contain vocabularies.
