Description: |
The collection consists of photographs from the papers of author and filmmaker Norman Mailer (American, 1923-2007). Included are eight contact sheets and one enlargement from a portrait sitting with photographer Diane Arbus (American, 1923-1971) commissioned by the New York Times Book Review in 1963, as well as a contact print of Arbus’s photograph Waitress, Nudist Camp, N.J., 1963. Printed in 1967 on the occasion of the Museum of Modern Art exhibition New Documents, the print verso is inscribed in the artist’s hand, “Dear N. + B., There is a show at the Museum of Modern Art; a third of it is my photographs. I would especially like you to see it……Diane.” Also included are fifteen contact sheets from a portrait sitting with photographer Richard Avedon (American, 1923-2004) at Mailer’s home in Brooklyn, New York, in 1962. |
