Inscribed in pencil by Joe Coltharp, Curator of Photography, upper right mount verso: "c - 1870 / Purchased 4-77 from / Valerie Craig. / Simsbury Conn.". Printed on paper adhered to center mount verso: "Volunteer. / Volunteer Firemen's Ass'n. N. Y. / J. J. STRINGER, PHOTOGRAPHER, 26 E. 39th Street.".The photograph is of an ornate hand-drawn pumper for fire fighting.
