Published volume by William Howitt (British, 1792-1879) and Mary Botham Howitt (British, 1799-1888), titled Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain and Ireland (London: A.W. Bennett, 1862), containing 27 mounted photographs (albumen prints). The photographers whose work is included are Roger Fenton (British, 1819-1869), Francis Bedford (British, 1816-1894), McLean & Melhuish (British, active 1860s), William Russell Sedgfield (British, 1826-1902), and George Washington Wilson (Scottish, 1823-1893). This copy, one of three held by the Ransom Center, is bound in a green binding by Westley's & Co. of London, and it is stamped Gernsheim Collection and Claude Moat. The photographer and the printed caption for each plate follow. |
