Description: |
Forty gelatin silver prints of photographs by Nancy Lee Katz (1947-2018). Katz, an American photographer, worked for over 25 years on a private project of photographing people whose work she enjoyed and respected. She created portraits of artists, playwrights, and other creative figures, but never sold, exhibitied, or published the photographs. Katz generally printed two copies of the best image from each shoot, and gave one of those to the sitter. In the years after her death Katz's long-time partner, Michael S. Sachs has donated copies of the best images from her shoots to museums in an effort to preserve her work and legacy. Ransom Center curators participated in choosing which images make up this collection, and the Center holds the archives of many of the writiers, playwrights, and visual artists who appear. The photographs were made between 1976 and 2010, and all were printed between 2018 and 2022. All are blindstamped with "Nancy Lee Katz" in the bottom margin of the recto. The name of the subjects and the date taken are written on the verso; in pencil for analog prints, in pen for digital prints. |
