M. J. Ivers and CompanyThe publishing firm of M. J. Ivers and Company was founded in New York around 1882. In 1898 it acquired the assets of the firm of Beadle and Adams, including the Dime Library. The firm went out of business around 1905 and its assets were acquired by the Arthur Westbrook Company of Cincinnati. See 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 49 (1986), p. 221.2009
M. Witmark & SonsThe music publishing firm of M. Witmark & Sons was established in New York City in 1885. In 1928 the firm was purchased by Warner Brothers Pictures, and it is identified as one of the predecessor firms of Warner/Chappell Music, Inc. in the history pages of www.warnerchappell.com.2007
Macdonald & Co.The publishing firm of Macdonald & Co. was acquired by Robert Maxwell and became part of the British Printing & Communications Corporation, later the Maxwell Communications Corporation. In 1989, Maxwell sold Macdonald's Children's Books and Macdonald Educational to Simon & Schuster. All the Simon & Schuster educational businesses were bought by Pearson in 1998, forming the basis of Pearson Education. After Robert Maxwell's death in 1991, much of the remainder of the Macdonald firm was bought by Little, Brown UK, while titles published by Macdonald Children's Books were acquired by Hodder Children's Books. Macfarlane Walter & RossMacfarlane Walter & Ross was a non-fiction publishing firm based in Toronto. In 2000 the firm was acquired by McClelland & Stewart. See www.mcclelland.com.2008
Macgibbon and Kee LtdThe publishing firm of Macgibbon and Kee was founded in London in 1949. The firm developed close links with Rupert Hart-Davis Ltd (q.v.) and, like Hart-Davis, was acquired by Granada Publishing (in 1968). In 1972 Granada created Hart-Davis, Macgibbon Ltd, although Macgibbon and Kee remained registered as a company. The archives of Macgibbon and Kee are in the University of Glasgow Library, and the following sentence is taken from their catalogue: "The company appears to have been dissolved in c.1983 when Granada sold its publishing interests to the Scottish publishers William Collins, Sons & Co Ltd, Glasgow." Mahlon DayThe publishing firm of Day and Turner was founded in New York in 1815 by Mahlon Day and Charles Turner. Turner withdrew from the firm around 1820 and it continued as Mahlon Day until 1846 when Day retired. From 1846 the firm continued as Baker, Crane and Day (q.v.), but it went out of business in 1848. Manthorne and Burack, Inc.Manthorne and Burack was a small publishing house in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1945 the firm merged with John W. Luce and Company. See the FOB entry for John W. Luce and Company, which indicates that the merged firm ceased publishing new titles in 1947, and went out of business shortly afterwards. Marshall, Morgan & ScottThe religious publishing firm of Marshall, Morgan and Scott merged with Pickering & Inglis in the mid-1980s to form Marshall Pickering. Mason, Baker and PrattThe firm of D. F. Robinson and Company was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1828, and is the original predecessor firm of Baker and Taylor. The name of Baker and Taylor was adopted in 1885, and between 1828 and 1885 the firm had many names, including Robinson, Pratt and Company; Pratt, Woodford and Company; Farmer, Brace and Company; Blakeman and Mason; Oakley and Mason; Mason, Baker and Pratt; and Baker, Pratt and Company.
