Scott ForesmanThe Scott Foresman imprint was founded in 1889. It is now part of the Pearson Group. See www.pearson.com. The firm of Scott Foresman & Co. was purchased by Time Inc. in 1985 and then sold to Harper & Row in 1989. News Corporation incorporated Scott Foresman into HarperCollins Educational Publishers and then sold HarperCollins Educational to Addison-Wesley in 1996. Secker & WarburgSecker & Warburg was founded as Martin Secker in 1910 and purchased by Fredric Warburg in 1936. In the early 1980s the firm became part of the Heinemann Group, which in turn was taken over by Reed International and then by Random House. Random House was purchased by Bertelsmann AG in 1998 and now functions as a "corporate division" of Bertelsmann. See www.bertelsmann.com. Sheldon and CompanyIn 1853 Smith Sheldon purchased the publishing firm of Lamport, Blakeman and Law and renamed it Sheldon, Lamport and Blakeman. Shepard, Clark and BrownThe publishing firm of Shepard, Clark and Company was founded in Boston in 1855 by Charles A. B. Shepard, H. A. Clark and E. C. Walker. In 1857 Walker was replaced by E. W. Brown and the company was renamed Shepard, Clark and Brown. It went out of business in 1859. Charles Shepard later became one of the founders of Lee and Shepard (q.v.). Sidgwick & JacksonSidgwick & Jackson was founded in 1908, and was purchased by Macmillan from Lord Forte in the mid-1980s. Since 1999, Macmillan has been wholly owned by the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group. Sidgwick & Jackson forms part of the Pan Macmillan division within Holtzbrinck. See www.holtzbrinck.com.2006
Silas Andrus and SonSilas Andrus founded his publishing firm in Hartford, Connecticut in 1820. In the 1830s the firm was known as Andrus and Judd. Andrus went bankrupt in 1839, but in 1844 he re-formed the firm as Silas Andrus and Son and continued publishing until the firm went out of business around 1855. Silver Burdett CompanySilver Burdett Company was founded (as Silver & Co.) in the 1880s as an education publishing house. The firm was purchased in 1985-86 by Simon & Schuster. In 1998 all the Simon & Schuster educational businesses, including Silver Burdett Company, were sold to Pearson, which formed a new company called Pearson Education. The name of Silver Burdett is preserved in the Pearson imprint of Silver Burdett Ginn. See www.pearsoned.com.2008
Simpkin Marshall LtdThe publishing and wholesaling firm of Simpkin Marshall was founded in 1779. The firm ceased trading and declared bankruptcy in 1955. See reports in 'The Times', April-June 1955. Small, Maynard and CompanyThe publishing firm of Small, Maynard and Company was founded in Boston in 1897 by Herbert Small and Laurens Maynard. The firm was in financial difficulty by the mid-1920s.
