Gulliver BooksGulliver Books was established as a children's publishing imprint of the Harcourt, Brace & Company. See the FOB entry for Harcourt, Brace & Company, which was owned by Reed Elsevier from 1998 to 2007. The Gulliver Books imprint was discontinued by Harcourt Children's Books from 2005, but, from 2008, following the acquisition of Harcourt by Houghton Mifflin, the name of Gulliver has reappeared on Harcourt websites. H. C. Peck and Theo. BlissThe publishing firm of H. C. Peck and Theo. Bliss was founded in Philadelphia in 1850 by Horace C. Peck and Theodore Bliss. The firm got into financial difficulties during the Civil War and the partnership was dissolved in 1862. Harcourt, Brace & CompanyHarcourt, Brace & Company was founded by Alfred Harcourt and Donald Brace in 1919. In the 1950s the firm became known as Harcourt, Brace & World and then Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ); later it reverted to Harcourt Brace. In 1998 Harcourt Brace & Company was acquired by Reed Elsevier, and in December 2007 Reed Elsevier sold Harcourt Education, Harcourt Trade and Greenwood-Heinemann to Houghton Mifflin. Harleyford BooksHarleyford Books was purchased by Arms & Armour in 1981. Arms & Armour was purchased by Cassell in 1987. Cassell was purchased by Hachette in 1998, and subsequently divided. Harmony BooksHarmony Books was an imprint of Crown Publishing Group, part of the Outlet Book Company. See the FOB entries for Outlet and Crown, which indicate that in 1988 the firm was bought by Random House. Random House is owned by Bertelsmann. Harper & BrothersThe firm of Harper & Brothers was founded in New York City in 1817 by James and John Harper. It was originally called J. and J. Harper. In 1962 Harper & Brothers merged with the Illinois publishing firm of Row, Peterson & Co. to form Harper & Row. Harper & Row was acquired by News Corporation in 1987 and merged with William Collins in the early 1990s to form HarperCollins. See www.newscorp.com.2009
Hawthorn Books, Inc.The publishing firm of Hawthorn Books, Inc. was founded by Kenneth S. Giniger in 1952 as a subsidiary of Prentice-Hall. In 1967 the firm was sold to the Clement Stone interests, and in 1977 it was sold on to W. H. Allen. The firm was closed in 1977, but its publishing assets were bought by E. P. Dutton.
