Haldeman-Julius CompanyThe Haldeman-Julius Company was a publishing firm founded in 1922 as the successor company to the Appeal Publishing Company (q.v.). The firm published many titles as Big Blue Books and Little Blue Books. In 1964 the firm was prosecuted for selling books on sex education, and went out of business. Harcourt, Brace & CompanyHarcourt, Brace & Company was founded by Alfred Harcourt and Donald Brace in 1919. In the 1950s the firm became known as Harcourt, Brace & World and then Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ); later it reverted to Harcourt Brace. In 1998 Harcourt Brace & Company was acquired by Reed Elsevier, and in December 2007 Reed Elsevier sold Harcourt Education, Harcourt Trade and Greenwood-Heinemann to Houghton Mifflin. Harper & BrothersThe firm of Harper & Brothers was founded in New York City in 1817 by James and John Harper. It was originally called J. and J. Harper. In 1962 Harper & Brothers merged with the Illinois publishing firm of Row, Peterson & Co. to form Harper & Row. Herbert Jenkins LtdThe novelist Herbert Jenkins founded his own publishing company in 1912. The firm of Herbert Jenkins Ltd merged with Barrie & Rockliff in 1964 to form Barrie & Jenkins. J. B. BaillièreJean-Baptiste Baillière founded his own medical publishing firm in Paris in 1818 and opened a London office in 1826. See 'Mumby's Publishing and bookselling in the twentieth century', 6th ed. by Ian Norrie (1982). Baillière died in 1867 and two years later his widow sold the firm to A. A. Tindall and William Cox. J. B. LippincottThe Lippincott publishing company was founded in 1785 and remained a family firm until it was purchased by Harper & Row in 1977. Harper & Row created an imprint called Lippincott & Crowell. The Lippincott division was sold by HarperCollins to Wolters Kluwer in 1990.
