Street and SmithThe publishing firm of Street and Smith was founded in New York in 1855 by Francis Scott Street and Francis Shubael Smith. In 1921 it founded a subsidiary firm called Chelsea House (q.v.). When Chelsea House was closed in 1933, Street and Smith ceased to be book publishers but continued to publish magazines and journals. in 1959 the firm was purchased by Condé Nast. Student Book ExchangeStudent Book Exchange (SBX) was a bookstore founded by Leonard Riggio in New York in 1965. By the 1970s SBX had expanded such that it was able to acquire Barnes & Noble. Thereafter the Barnes & Noble name was used for all the firm's stores. See www.barnesandnobleinc.com.2008
Stuttgarter HausbüchereiStuttgarter Hausbücherei was established in 1948 as a German national book club and the first significant firm controlled by Georg von Holtzbrinck. In the late 1950s the firm was renamed Deutscher Bücherbund. Deutscher Bücherbund remained the principal company within the Holtzbrink Group until the 1980s, but in 1989 it was sold to Kirch Group. The Kirch Group (KirchGruppe) became insolvent and went out of existence in 2002. Rights in Deutscher Bücherbund appear to have been acquired by the Bertelsmann Group, and www.buecherbund.de now diverts to www.derclub.de (the website of Der Club, owned by Bertelsmann).2008

Sutton PublishingSutton Publishing was founded by Alan Sutton, and was subsequently in the ownership of Guernsey Press and Haynes, before being bought back by Alan Sutton's NPI Media company in January 2007. Swan SonnenscheinWilliam Swan Sonnenschein formed his first publishing firm, W. Swan Sonnenschein & Allen, in 1878. From 1882 this became W. Swan Sonnenschein & Co.
