CVBC ServicesThe publishing firm of CVBC was founded in 1982 when Chatto, Bodley Head & Cape bought Virago. See the FOB entries for each of the component firms of CVBC. D. and J. Sadleir and CompanyThe publishing firm of D. and J. Sadleir and Company was founded in New York in 1837 by the brothers Denis and James Sadleir. In 1895 the rights and plates of many of the firm's most important books were sold to P. J. Kenedy and in 1912 Kenedy purchased the rest of the firm's assets. Dale Seymour Co.Dale Seymour Co., a school supplemental publisher, was acquired by the Addison-Wesley division of Pearson in 1989. Addison-Wesley had been purchased by Pearson plc in 1988, and still forms part of the Pearson Group. Dime LibraryThe Dime Library was created by Beadle and Adams around 1859. At various times it was known as Dime Novels, Beadle's Dime Novels, Beadle's Dime Books and Beadle's Dime Publications. Duell, Sloan and PearceThe publishing firm of Duell, Sloan and Pearce was founded in New York in 1939 by C. Halliwell Duell, Samuel Sloan and Charles A. Pearce. In 1961 the firm was acquired by Meredith Publishing Company. According to 'Dictionary of Literary Biography' 46 (1986), Meredith retired Duell, Sloan and Pearce as an imprint in 1967. According to John Tebbel: 'A history of book publishing in the United States', Volume IV (1981), all rights in Duell, Sloan and Pearce titles were purchased from Meredith in 1969 by Hawthorn Books. E. & F. N. SponE. & F. N. Spon (also known as the Spon Press) began publishing around 1850, specialising in engineering and architectural works, and eventually became part of the Routledge Group. E. J. Arnold & Son LtdE. J. Arnold & Son Ltd was founded in Leeds in 1863 and became a major firm of stationers, printers and publishers. In 1989 most of the firm was acquired by Nottingham Group plc and merged with Nottingham Educational Supplies to form NES Arnold.
