The Isabel Colegate papers consist of drafts of published and unpublished works, research,
contracts, personal and professional correspondence, notebooks, personal papers, and
clippings belonging to English novelist Isabel Colegate. The personal and professional
papers document Colegate's career and writing process and include novels, short stories,
articles, book reviews, essays, and television scripts. The papers are organized into
two
series: I. Works, 1960-2004, undated and II. Personal and Professional Papers, 1931-2021,
undated. |
|
Series I. Works constitutes the bulk of the papers and includes materials associated
with
Colegate's writings. It is arranged into two subseries: A. Notebooks, 1960, undated
and B.
Typescripts and Unbound Drafts, 1980-2004, undated. |
|
Subseries A. Notebooks represents most of Colegate's published novels, and include
outlines, drafts, research notes, jottings, illustrations, short stories, and unidentified
works. Colegate seemed to handwrite early drafts of her novels and short stories in
journal
notebooks, but many of these are unidentified, undated, and incomplete. In some cases,
Colegate gave titles to individual journals, but in most cases the title given in
the
container list is based on comparing the text to published books or is the first titled
work
within the journal. Very often, notebooks contain multiple identified and unidentified
drafts, idea fragments, jottings (such as phone numbers or lists), and other notes.
Colegate
often flipped the journal and began using the back for a new work or project, so one
should
look at all pages even if the journal appears to have many blank sections. Some notebooks
contain inserted pages or papers that are not attached to the notebook itself, typically
as
continuations or edits of drafts within the notebook, but some of these inserts are
unrelated to the notebook's contents. The notes are most often research in the form
of book
lists and notes from various sources, or early outlines and character notes for her
novels.
Most notebooks are in good condition, but some are fragile, worn, or contain minor
damage. |
|
Subseries B. Typescripts and Unbound Drafts represents most of Colegate's later short
stories and articles, and includes drafts, notes, clippings, lectures, book reviews,
correspondence, and research. Articles written by Colegate are dated from 1989 to
2002 and
includes multiple copies and drafts of an undated article about her early life. Book
reviews
are dated from 1980 to 1999 and include annotated drafts and clippings. Lectures include
one
undated speech about Isabelle Eberhardt and the related correspondence and early drafts
for
a lecture given at the Bath International Music Festival on Colegate's hermit exhibition,
held at the Holburne Museum of Art and dated 2001 to 2002. |
|
Short stories include undated typescripts of story drafts, some of which are annotated,
incomplete, untitled, or have multiple copies. Short stories are arranged alphabetically
by
title within the papers, with multiple copies of the same story kept grouped together.
Novels include unbound drafts, notes, outlines, research, and correspondence related
to
Colegate's novels, primarily her final novel A Pelican in the
Wilderness (2002). Folders related to A Pelican in the
Wilderness contain documentation and correspondence for the associated exhibition,
A Pelican in the Wilderness: Hermits and Solitaries in Art,
held at the Holburne Museum of Art in 2002. This subseries also contains materials
related
to English writer and poet Walter Savage Landor (30 January 1775 – 17 September 1864),
including short story drafts, notes, research, and various other writings by Colegate
about
Landor. |
|
Series II. Personal and Professional Papers, 1931-2021, undated consists of awards,
clippings, contracts, correspondence, notes, royalty statements, and other collected
material belonging to Isabel Colegate. |

of Bath in 1988 and a certificate in flute from the Royal Schools of Music dated 1948. |

Anthony Blond, including one obituary written by Colegate. It also contains a pamphlet

Blond's funeral service, a eulogy draft written by Colegate, and a newspaper article
about
the death of Blond's wife, Laura Blond, not written by Colegate. The subseries is
dated from
1993 to 2009, but the bulk of materials are dated 2008 around the time of Blond's
death. |
|
Briggs, Michael contains materials related to Michael Briggs's honorary Doctor of
Laws
degree received from the University of Bath in 2002, including a conferment speech,
biographical details of Briggs, a speech written by Briggs, and a newspaper clipping
about
the event. |
|

or her
work, usually in the form of book reviews or articles related to her home at Midford
Castle.
Most of the clippings are news articles and book reviews related to her final novel
A Pelican in the Wilderness (2002). There is one clipping of an
obituary for English novelist and painter Jini Fiennes (27 February 1938 – 28 December
1993), not written by or containing mention of Colegate. |
|

life,
including a photographic reproduction of an unidentified painting; a negative photo

articles, book reviews, and other works. Contract documentation includes both original
publications and reprints, as well as contracts for derivative works based on Colegate's
novels. The materials date between 1964 and 2019, with some undated documents. |
|
Correspondence is arranged in chronological order by date, and includes handwritten
and
typed letters, postcards, invitations, memos, and telegrams. Correspondence is dated
from
1950 to 2020 with some undated materials, but the bulk of the letters are dated between
1980
and 2002. Much of the correspondence dated between 2000 and 2003 is related to Colegate's
final novel, A Pelican in the Wilderness (2002), and its
associated exhibit at the Holburne Museum of Art. Some correspondence related to
contracts—but missing the discussed contract documentation—has been left in this subseries.
Correspondence related to royalty statements and other financial records are filed
with
Royalty Statements. |
|
Derivative Works contains works by other authors based on or in reference to Colegate's
novels. It includes a 2004 essay titled Shakespeare in Solitary by American-English
actor
Peter Eyre (11 March 1942-), which references Colegate's A Pelican in
the Wilderness (2002), and a 1991 paper titled "The Influence of Sophocles' Theban
Plays on Modern Literature" by Henry E. A. H. Stewart, which references Colegate's
trilogy of
Orlando King novels. |
