Description:

The collection consists of 257 prints by Edward Steichen (American, 1879-1973). Included are examples of his fashion and portrait photography done for Conde Nast, as well as photographs taken during World War II while he served as the director of Naval Combat Photography. Select group- and item-level descriptions follow.

974:0255:0001-0172 -- Gelatin silver prints from Steichen's time with the US Navy during World War II, photographs by other photographers included. Subject matter includes ships, US Marines, and battle scenes. See finding aid for item-level information.

979:0031:0001-0039 -- Uncut, folded photogravure prints (62 images) for Carl Sandburg’s Steichen the Photographer (New York : Harcourt, Brace, copyright 1929), 1945. The Center's library holds three copies of the published work that may be requested using call number q TR 650 S3 HRC-P.

979:0038:0001-0015 -- Mounted gelatin silver prints commissioned for the Limited Editions Club edition of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden.
