Description:

The collection consists of 28 photographs by James Robertson (British, 1813-1888), and a published engraving by H. Bibby derived from one of Robertson's photographs. The photographs are primarily of views of the Crimean War, 1853-1860, and focus on the destruction of the Redan and the Malakhov (the two major forts guarding Sevastopol), the destruction of the city of Sevastopol, and the military camps at Balaklava Harbor. Included amongst these images are two group portraits of military officers, including a committee comprised of Mr. Macleod, Major Edwards, Sir John Lawrence, Mr. Montgomery, and Col. Macpherson. The collection also includes five views of Athens, Greece, specifically of prominent archaeological sites including the Erechtheion and Parthenon on the Acropolis, the Arch of Hadrian, and the Temple of Zeus, Olympia. Additionally there are three views of Istanbul, one of which is a panorama.
