Description:

The collection consists of 66 photographs taken by the photography studio Robertson & Beato (Turkish, established 1853 or 1854, dissolved 1867), a partnership of James Robertson (British, 1813-1888) and Felice Beato (Italian-British, 1832-1909). The photographs. which are all albumen prints, are views of Jerusalem (32), Istanbul (31), and Egypt (6), and include three panoramas of Istanbul and one panorama of Jerusalem. The views of Jerusalem focus on sites of religious significance, including the Garden of Gethsemane, Bethlehem, Bethany, the Ecce Homo Arch on the Via Dolorosa, the Wailing Wall, Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Additional attention is given to the old city gates. The views of Istanbul focus on significant structures within the city, including mosques (Hagia Sophia, Suleymaniye Mosque), fountains (Fountain of Ahmet III, Fountain of Ejoub), monuments (obelisks in the Hippodrome, Scutari cemetery), and palaces and fortresses (Dolmabahce Palace, Rumeli Hisari). Also included are images of prominent landmarks such as the Bosphorus (Istanbul Straight) and the Golden Horn. The six views of Egypt are of sites in Cairo and the monuments at Giza.
